Stephen Grant is an experienced family lawyer, specializing in complex financial cases. He has appeared in courts across the country as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. Along with his counsel practice, he acts as a mediator/arbitrator in family and estates matters.

Stephen is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and Editor of the ACTL Journal. He is also a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (of which he was the first Canadian Chapter President).Stephen is the Editor of the Advocates’ Journal, the main publication of the Advocates’ Society, the Editor-in-Chief of the Ontario Reports and co-author of Lawyers’ Professional Liability, now in its 3rd edition. Stephen also contributes the occasional travel article to the Globe and Mail.

Stephen was awarded the Law Society Medal in 2006, The Advocates’ Society Medal in 2017, and most recently, the 2017 OBA Award for Excellence in Family Law.

Erin K. Crawford has practiced exclusively in the area of family law since her call to the Ontario bar in 2003.

Erin’s focus is on the representation of clients dealing with sophisticated and complex financial matters arising out of separation and divorce, including issues around family trusts, privately held companies and income determination.  She acts to provide advice on marriage contracts (prenuptial agreements) and other domestic contracts as well as having an active litigation practice in both the court system and in mediation/arbitration.

Erin is a member of the The Advocates’ Society; the Associate of Family and Conciliation Courts, is an associate member of Ontario Association for Family Mediation, a fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and was previously on the Executive of the Ontario Bar Association (“OBA”). She is a presenter at the Mandatory Information Program, for parties to family law litigation, and acts as a mentor to young lawyers and law students at the OBA and through the University of Windsor and other law schools. Erin formerly represented children in custody and access matters, as a member of the Office of the Children’s Lawyer.

Erin presents regularly at family law conferences, having written papers on various family law topics including expert evidence and trial advocacy.

Meghan received her J.D. from the University of Windsor in 2011 and earned her B.A. in Criminology and History from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2007. While at the University of Windsor, Meghan gained invaluable insight into the judicial prospective while clerking at the Ontario Court of Justice, Family Court.

Called to the Ontario Bar in 2008, Erica has practiced family law exclusively since 2013. She represents and advises clients on all issues of divorce and separation, property equalization, spousal and child support, custody and parenting arrangements, and separation agreements and other domestic contracts (marriage and cohabitation agreements). Prior to focusing on family law, Erica practiced corporate commercial litigation at a top-tier multi-national law firm.

Drawing on her corporate background, Erica regularly works on cases involving complex financial and property arrangements where family, business, tax and trusts law often intersect. Where possible, Erica prefers to resolve matters by way of negotiated settlement tailored to each family’s unique needs and desired outcomes. Where an out of court settlement is not possible, Erica is a strong and determined litigator. She has appeared at all levels of court in Ontario, as well as the Court of Queen’s Bench in Alberta and the Nova Scotia Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.

Erica appreciates that her clients are often working through one of the most difficult times in their lives.  Personally, she strives to achieve an outcome that lays a foundation for each client’s future success. Stephanie Garbe is an associate at Grant Crawford & Watson LLP. Prior to joining the firm, Stephanie clerked at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, where she worked with the judges of the Unified Family Court on challenging domestic contracts, support claims and custody cases.

Stephanie earned her J.D. from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Science from McGill University. In law school, she represented Queen’s at the Harold G. Fox Intellectual Property Law Moot. She also volunteered with the Queen’s Business Law Clinic and Pro Bono Students Canada. Prior to law school, Stephanie was employed at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment where she drafted legislation.

Gerald Sadvari has over 35 years of experience as family law counsel in all courts in Ontario, and has provided expert testimony in numerous cases in the Superior Court of Ontario.

Gerry is a Certified Family Law Arbitrator and has conducted an alternative dispute resolution practise since 1990. Gerry appears in all editions in the Canadian Legal Expert Directory as one of the most recommended family law lawyers in Ontario. Gerry is also recognized in Best Lawyers in Canada as a leading lawyer in family law and family law mediation.

Gerry has published over 150 articles in the area of Family Law in various publications, including articles for The Law Society of Upper Canada and the Canadian Bar Association’s Family Law Program on topics of support, advocacy, marriage contracts, valuation of property and trusts. He is the co-author of “The Separation Agreement, Annotated” which is the standard form of the separation agreement in the Province.

Gerry received his BA from the University of Toronto and his LLB from Queen’s University. Gerry was called to the Ontario bar in 1978.

Since June 2013 Gerry has restricted his practice to ADR.

Stephanie K. Sroka is a Law Clerk with Grant Crawford & Watson LLP. Prior to joining the firm, Stephanie worked at a Bay Street firm as well as a boutique law firm specializing in Family Law.

Stephanie is a former Assistant Trial Coordinator with the Superior Court of Justice where she worked closely with the Judiciary. She played a key role in assisting the bench and bar transition to the Family Law Rules in 2004. Stephanie was also a regular presenter at the Ontario Bar Association and the Law Society of Upper Canada with respect to Court process and procedures.

Stephanie works closely with clients in preparing financial statements, disclosure briefs, net family property statements and uncontested divorces. She assists the lawyers with motion material, mediation material and preparation for arbitration and trials.

Leigh-Anne is a Senior Law Clerk at Grant Crawford & Watson LLP. Following her B.A. in Classical Studies at the University of Toronto, Leigh-Anne completed the Ontario Institute of Law Clerks Honors Program at Humber College, earning special recognition in family and corporate law. With a special passion and understanding for family law, Leigh-Anne chose to work exclusively in this field.

Family Law Legal Assistant

Grant Crawford & Watson is growing, and we are looking to add a full-time Legal Assistant to our team with 3+ years of experience in Family Law.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working in a team environment
  • Oversee calendar appointment/meeting bookings for lawyers
  • Initial contact person on client files, for both external and internal inquiries
  • Maintain and organize client files on a daily basis (both paper and electronic)
  • Produce and edit legal documents including: letters, memos, faxes and agreements
  • Ongoing communication with clients and other law firms
  • Manage lawyers’ mail and email correspondence including maintenance of daily ‘bring forward’ system
  • Other administrative duties as required
  • Preparation of court filings and liaise with process servers, including preparation of Affidavits of Service, administrative affidavits, and confirmations
  • Preparation and organization of financial disclosure, mediation materials and other document briefs

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Family Law with knowledge of relevant legislation and rules of court
  • Confident, dependable team player with initiative
  • Self-starter with very strong attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills to help run office effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to work in a multi-task environment and be organized to follow-up on status and completion of tasks with other members of the firm
  • Strong ability to work independently
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office, PC Law and Divorcemate
  • Graduate of a recognized post-secondary legal assistant program an asset
  • Solid understanding of Family Law Rules and office procedures
